So I know that a lot of people have reservations about our mate Harley, but don’t let that get in the way of listening to what he has to say in this video, as it’s very relevant to hardcore and the way it’s played. It’s not overly eloquent, but he gets the idea across and highlights some things that have always irked me about a lot of hardcore bands’ lazy playing style, namely in the drums and bass depts. Put a bit more into it and get a lot more out of it. Say no to cheat beat* drumming and lazy up-and-down banana** riff picking!
* where a drummer playing a fast beat only hits the hi hat when hitting the snare, usually while employing a banana** bass/snare pattern
** a riff/beat style that follows a pattern that you can say the word ‘banana’ along to:
ba-nana ba-nana ba-nana ba-nana
Very popular in the early 2000s
